Full speed ahead on board the Hugo Boss

Posted by Edward Dy on September 18th, 2008

The luxury Hugo Boss yacht is among the most opulent sailboats of today. The designer held a lavish ceremony in Hamburg, Germany in celebration of the HUGO BOSS sailing yacht’s official baptism.

The ceremony came complete with light, laser as well as pyrotechnic show. The celebration took place in one of the city’s fish auction halls where about 600 local and international guests attended.

This is a much discussed racing yacht. The actual account of how this racing yacht came to be is actually shrouded in secrecy.

The yacht is over 20 meters long, has a 27 meter mast and boasts of an awesome black sail. The new Boss boat is lighter and more agile than its predecessor, which was sailed by British skipper Alex Thomson in the VELUX 5 Oceans Regatta in 2006.

Farr Yacht Design started the trend for a central tunnel and winch for halyards and sheets. However, in the case of Hugo Boss designers Groupe Finot, they have taken the art a level higher and created it with an open channel in between the two cuddies. The lines of this one went through the biggest rope organizer Spinlock has ever manufactured.

The twin-cuddy arrangement, along with a couple of wheels as well as protective fairing outboard, makes one think that maybe this race yacht ought to have been a catamaran.

Finot developed these themes in order to make the boat appear and feel very manly and aggressive, with plenty of beautiful varnished carbon fiber. One can even find a small Hugo Boss logo into carbon hull at the stern.

The curves and blister coachroof styling that Finot pioneered and were once de rigeuer on Open 60s is gone. Overall the boat is angular in design, with chines on deck and on the hull. This makes the new Hugo Boss appear very wide aft.

Hugo Boss is to undergo a 180-degree inclining test in Gosport and will be rigged and be made to udergo sea trials.

Pretend that you are circumnavigating the world or riding on the trade wind. This is such a wonderful experience as you leave it all behind.

American Eagle was at one time a famous ocean racer under the command of Ted Turner.

From 1969 to 1974, the magnificent American Eagle ruled offshore waters, as it won the first World Ocean Racing Championship. The yacht has set records in the distinguished S.O.R.C. , Fastnet as well as Sydney-Hobart Races.

Ted Turner won the coveted “Yachtsman of the Year” award twice while owner/skipper of American Eagle. However, turner sold Eagle in 1976 to pursue and eventually fulfill his dream of defending the America’s Cup.

In 1977 he successfully skippered the 12 Meter Courageous in the Cup.

On the other hand, the American Eagle’s new owner Warren Brown of Bermuda, continued American Eagle’s astonishing career as he crossed the Atlantic Ocean many times and winning major boat races in the Mediterranean as well as the Aegean Seas.

Eagle finished close behind the wining Turner and his Tenacious in the deadly 1979 Fastnet Race storm, demonstrating her seaworthiness. This was the event that sent many of the other competitors plunging to the bottom of the sea.

American Eagle, sporting one of the most prestigious racer records in ocean racing history, continues to provide a rare and memorable opportunity for you and your guests.

Take the wheel and sense the sheer power and exhilaration that only the big Twelves provide. Relax in the spacious cockpit or curl up below decks on one of Eagle’s cozy bunks.

The American Eagle sails on three, four, and six-day cruises, exploring the Down East coast of Maine and Canada’s Bay of Fundy.

Lighthouses, wildlife, and unspoiled scenery are part of every trip. Each cruise is a unique experience.

The Lone Ranger

Posted by Edward Dy on September 11th, 2008

About eight years ago, former head of Progressive insurance company Peter Lewis, spent almost $17 million to purchase this intrepid cruiser that he calls the “Lone Ranger.”

Indeed, just by looking at this beautiful yacht, no one can argue that it was money well spent, especially when you take into consideration that he took the former salvage tug on a circumnavigation about two years after that and just a few months ago, he returned from a voyage to Antarctica.

This yacht was named after a favorite radio program when Peter Lewis was still young. He said a few years back that he identified with the masked cowboy, particularly when faced with adversity in the business world.

Well, regardless of what he identifies with, this luxury yacht is truly amazing.
