The Eclipse, Soon to be the World’s Largest Yacht

Posted by Maita Yoldi on July 10th, 2008

the Eclipse, soon to be the world\'s largest yachtThe construction of the world’s largest yacht is underway, hidden from view at a construction dock in germany. Owned by Russian billionaire Roman Abramovich, the Eclipse is his newest toy - among a bevy of other luxury yachts.

Abramovich will soon set a new standard in the mega-yacht trend. The picture shown at right is that of yacht M-147, has been largely compared to the Eclipse, and thought to be a prototype for it. It is said to have a swimming pool, a cinema and a disco, a capacity for 24 in six guest suites, five VIP suites and an owner’s cabin.

This megayacht will most likely be equipped with multiple helicopter pads and an integrated submarine, two features of the M-147 that is said to also be included on the Eclipse.

Mr. Abramovich, the Russian oil magnate ranked as the 11th richest man in the world by Forbes with $18.2 billion, has an impressive fleet. In addition to Eclipse — expected to measure more than 525 feet — he owns three other mega-yachts, including the 377-foot Pelorus and the 282-foot Ecstasea. He used to own four but recently awarded one, the 370-foot Grand Bleu, to a close business associate.

The yacht Leander is truly a class of its own and perhaps still one of the best in Britain. It was the choice of yacht for royalty - Prince Charles reportedly chartered this beauty for around 280,000 British Pounds a week when he and and the Duchess of Cornwall took to sail the Carribbean Islands last February.

The Leander is a 245-feet motor yacht with a 25-member crew, owned by multi-millionaire Sir Donald Gosling. Leander, inside a dark-blue hull that is almost the exact shade of the old royal yacht, offers facilities that Britannia never did, including a swimming pool, two onboard exercise bikes and a team of stewardesses willing to run candlelit baths 24 hours a day.

Other toys found on board are 2 30′ custom built tenders with twin 300 hp Cummins engine, 18′ Boston Whaler with 130 hp, 19′ RIB with 130 hp, 5.5mt rib with 130 hp, 3 sets of waterskis, 3 Mistral windsurfers, an O’Brien kneeboard, 2 4 meter laser Pico sailing dinghies, 2 sets of ski tows, scuba gears with compressors, 3 Yamaha 700 Waverunners and fishing equipment.

240ft Silver by Hanseatic Marine

240ft Silver by Hanseatic Marine

Espen Oeino, designer of the yacht named Silver by Hanseatic Marine, breaks successful ground when the super yacht was acknowledged as one of the finest in the world. Launched in 2007, Silver is purposely designed to be slim and narrow, unlike the recent trend of wide floor yachts.

The reason for such design is to give the craft more speed, among others. despite its 240-foot length, it can still reach a speed of 27 knots powered by two 16V-4000 MTU engines. The slender profile of the yacht also allows it to go where no other yacht its size can because of its narrow body. Further, the owner specified on environmental consciousness - as such, the vessel just had to be energy efficient as well.

The interior was done by Silverstrin of Munich, Germany. It is largely Italian inspired but with a touch of minimalism. It holds one master suite, 5 double accommodation rooms and 2 twins with a capacity to hold 18 guests and 16 crew members.
